Earthdog trials are intended to simulate the work of terriers in vermin control with a focus on prey that hides underground. Most earthdog trials use tunnels that are supported by wood sides and tops dug into the ground, although some may consist of more natural form. Prey in the form of, usually, a rat is placed at the end of a tunnel and the dog is given the opportunity to enter the tunnel and navigate to the rat. The rat is protected from the dog for the purpose of these tests. For dogs still retaining their drive to hunt this activity is very satisfying.
- American Working Terrier
Mixes of some of the accepted breeds may also participate. Some clubs may offer :fun days" with broader mixed breed acceptance.
