Position article from the International Association of Canine Professionals does a good job of summarizing the issues in one page.
Shelter Statistics as reported to California Department of Health Services - a valuable collection from The Animal Council. The format is pdf so it will take some effort to make the figures useable in a spreadsheet, nevertheless the effort it must have take to create this resource is very significant and appreciated.
Animal control statistics - Shelter trak is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately its information base has not been widely embraced so its statistics are limited. Nevertheless they are important because they show that there have been significant trends over time. This supports the need for current information. It is unfortunate that there is not better information on the reasons for shelter euthanasia as even a limited study can show how raw numbers don't tell the story.
California shelter statistics - NAIA's shelter project collects shelter statistics. It offers a variety of charts to illustrate these statistics. Each chart includes the basis of the statistics. Try looking at county's with mandatory spay and neuter and then compare the chart to those without or overall California statistics. I wouldn't call it a win for mandatory spay and neuter.

It is ironic. At a time when our dog trainers increasingly focus on the effectiveness of "positive training methods" we find so-called animal advocates ignoring the lesson and clamoring for punitive laws to achieve their goals. Have they learned nothing? This article looks at what works, and what fails. It suggests not continuing down the path of failure. From the No Kill Advocacy Center.
What Can Statistics Do For You? by Richard Avanzino
Bad information is not the basis for good law. Available shelter statistics in California range from excellent to poor to non-existent. Reliability is often an issue. This article explains the importance of good statistics to support effective decision making.
