CHIEF COURSE BUILDER
Summary: You must know how to read a judge's course map and translate it into life-size. Next time you see one of our experienced course builders out there building, follow him or her out and see where s/he draws the line between making his own decisions on what is fair to the dog and when the judge should be consulted. It starts out as placing the equipment on the grid described in the grass just as it is drawn on the paper grid, and then there are judgments to make regarding what trap was intended or not, what challenges are appropriate for the skill level involved. To get the courses built quickly, you make use of all of the course builders who show up or are assigned to help you. You must work with experienced course builders to learn this job, but in some ways it's one of the easier ones: There is no work before the trial (except possibly showing up the night before when we set up our first day's courses) and you work on your own on the day of the trial—unlike trying to find workers as Ring Steward, your equipment is usually sitting and waiting for you.
