Ring Crew

Score Runner

Summary: Take scribe sheet from Assistant Scribe to Score Table.
Runners usually take sheets from the Assistant Scribe to the Score Table one at a time. Might require a bit of walking (probably not running). If the score table is far away you can wait and take two or three score sheets at one time.

Leash Runner

Summary: Take leashes from start line to finish line.
You should be as invisible as possible to the handler at the start. The handler will either drop the leash or hand it to you. You can certainly tell the person you are the leash runner and tell them where they will find the leash. But don't demand the leash or crowd the dog in anticipation of the removal of the leash. Some people have little rituals with the leash, or they are tense, or their dog is nervous. So please don't be offended if you are ignored or asked to step back. Just wait until the dog and handler leave the start line, then pick up the leash and move it to the finish line.

There should be a place designated for you to put the leash near the finish line. Don't swing the leash. You may walk just inside the ring rope if that isn't distracting to the dog. If the dog does notice you stand still and look away.

Pole Setter and Tunnel Straightener

Summary: Reset bars for height changes and when they are knocked by dogs during a run. Straighten the chute after the dog goes through it.

Judge will instruct you before each class as to where to sit and whether the bars are to be reset during a run; for example, if a jump is taken twice in the same run. Bars are never reset during a Gamblers run. If the course includes a collapsed tunnel, you will also straighten the tube after each dog goes through it. Ask the judge when is the best time to straighten the chute. Depending upon course design the judge may want you to do it only after the dog is finished, but in other cases you should do it as soon as the dog is far enough away not to notice you.

If you need to go on course while the dog is still running try to time it so the dog is moving away from you. Move quickly, but calmly. If the dog does notice you stand still and look away. This is a great job for watching each dog run as you must be attentive to the happening in the ring at all times.
