GATE STEWARD

Summary: Make sure dogs and handlers are ready at start line.
You must not be too shy for this job as it can require shouting for missing handlers. You must also be prepared for nervous handlers asking repeatedly when they will be running. It's a great way to get to know names and faces.

During walk through
Check to see it the Gate sheets (running order) are posted. Make sure you have something to mark the gate sheets.
Check where the start line is. Make sure the gate is as close as possible but outside the ring. Watch for the exit so dogs coming in can set up before the dog running is finished.
Introduce yourself to the judge. Ask where on the course the dog running should be when the next dog is asked to set up for their run.

As walk through is finished
Each person should tell you they are present, check them off. Note any conflicts with a "c" next to the name, or move the dog in the running order to avoid conflicts.
Assist the assistant scribe (scribe runner) in identifying dogs that have scratched (won't be running) and those that have changed running order.

When the judge calls for first dog on the line in x minutes
Call out the names of handlers and dogs of the first six or so to make sure they are present and aware of when they will be going into the ring.

As the runs proceed
Continue to call out the names of handlers and dogs of the next six or so to make sure they are present and aware of when they will be going into the ring.
Cross off the name of each team as they enter the ring.

You can make a show run faster and smoother if you:
Have the next three dogs ready to go.
Have the next dog on the starting line--without its collar!--before the previous dog finishes, if possible.
Provide information to the Assistant Scribe to ensure that the running order matches the scribe sheets.
